Patrick Keesey paints, draws, and makes furniture. He states that his drawing practice is essentially a form of meditation. It is a practice of paying attention and being aware of what is directly in front of him. It is a method of being present in each passing moment. He tracks his eye movement as it follows the shapes, forms, and spaces found in nature. His subject matter is generally the abstract patterns found in branches. He marks as he looks.
Keesey is not interested in conveying the subject in a representational way. He is interested in creating a “drawing equivalent” of the event. The resulting drawing is a record of a conversation between himself, the subject, and the materials used. It is a document of a specific moment of time passing at a specific location. He writes, “Paying attention in present time is more important to me than art. I mark whatever detail I notice in any particular moment. I'm looking at nature when I do this. The subject changes with the fluctuations of the mind, of consciousness and of awareness. ‘Art’ is secondary. I am actually not that interested in art for art’s sake. I'm more interested in being present if I can.”
Keesey was born in Bethesda, Maryland, and lives and works Marfa, Texas.
