Katrien Vermeire is an award winning photographer and filmmaker who captures the ominous intensity of silence. For her series Godspeed, she spent weeks amongst fireflies in the Great Smoky Mountains national park in Tennessee. With long exposure times up to forty-five minutes, this blinking natural phenomenon translates in a mishmash of dots and commas.
Vermeire’s photographic and audiovisual work has been presented internationally at galleries and festivals, such as the FOAM Photography Museum Amsterdam, the Biënnale of Sydney, the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent, the M Museum Leuven, The Museum of the National Bank of Belgium, the Locarno Film Festival, the Rhode Island International Film Festival, and the Mount Holyoke College Art Museum. Her work has been acquired by private collections in Australia, Belgium, France, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Switzerland, United States, Belgium’s Foreign Affairs’ Collection, the National Bank of Belgium Contemporary Art Collection, and the Flemish Government Arts & Heritage Collection.
Vermeire was born in Ostend, Belgium, and she lives and works in Brussels, Belgium.
