Joel Sokolov’s non-objective paintings are built layer upon layer, each step an exercise in using intuition. The paintings reflect a synthesis of his physical and internal environment through the use of shapes, colors, and mood. He allows the forms to slowly emerge one layer, shape, color at a time until they coalesce into a finished work.
Sokolov’s artwork was collected by Henry Geldzahler, who was a mentor and patron as well as by Werner Kramarsky and Mike Nichols, among many others. His work with fashion and decorative arts using textiles printed with his artwork have been collected and exhibited. In the 1990s, he was author/editor of Textile Design and Product Design 4, distributed by Rizzoli. He received grants from the Innovative Design Fund for his work with painted custom furniture as well as from Robert Rauschenberg’s Change, Inc., NYFA, Artists Space, the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation, and two nominations for the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant. He has completed commissions for several public spaces in Boston and New York City.
Sokolov’s artworks are included in numerous corporate, private, and museum collections worldwide. He was born in New York City, and lives between the Big Island, Hawaii, and New York City.
