Roberto Matta, Author
Red Hat, Green Hat is a poetic book of drawings created by Roberto Matta (Red Hat) that captures the depth of his friendship with Gordon Onslow Ford (Green Hat). These artists were the last official members of the Surrealist movement invited by André Breton before WWII. They formed a friendship that began in 1937 and lasted throughout their lives. The bond between the two was so profound that Matta named one of his twin sons Gordon (Matta-Clark).
In 1956, Gordon gifted Matta a Japanese accordion notebook when Matta visited him in California. Matta filled the book with surreal, humorous, and potent drawings encapsulating their connection and gifted it back to Gordon. For the first time, this book of drawings is being seen by the public.
This special, limited-edition book (100 copies, individually numbered) is partially handmade, has a hardcover, and includes 23 drawings. This collectible edition was created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Surrealism.
Knowing both artists, Fariba Bogzaran, cofounder of the Lucid Art Foundation, conceived and co-designed the book. To complement the drawings, she wrote an introduction and essay highlighting stories Matta and Gordon each shared with her.
We are grateful to co-designer Charles Cunningham of Prepress in San Francisco for assisting us in creating this beautifully crafted book.
