Barry Underwood is a photographer. He states that “I strive to foster awareness of environmental change by engaging viewers in unexpected visual hypotheses, offering novel lenses through which to consider the impact of human action on our surroundings, both locally and on a larger scale. I aim for my work to be a platform for conversations concerning environmental issues, using tropes of aesthetic beauty to reach across binary ideological lines.”
“Using shapes, lines, light, geometry, and especially color, my photographs reflect human disturbances, metaphorically suggesting the ways society divides and surveys landscapes or how we humans impose our vision on the natural environment.”
Underwood’s work has been exhibited widely, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland (Ohio); McDonough Museum of Art (Ohio); The Woodbury Art Museum (Utah); Laguna College of Art + Design Gallery (California); Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (Michigan); Dorsky Gallery (New York); The Sculpture Center (Ohio); Sous Les Etoiles Gallery (New York); and Johansson Projects Gallery (California).
Underwood was born in Wilmington, Delaware and lives and works in Cleveland, Ohio.
